The Dolomiti Superski ski destination combines endless fun on the slopes in 12 ski areas, surrounded by the picture-perfect landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dolomites. Holidaymakers here experience winter with a panoramic view. To help you get the most out of your stay, we have put together a short checklist. Practical, relaxed – and typical Hirben.
1. The right equipment: rent or bring your own?
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced carver, your equipment is one of the factors that determines how much fun you have skiing. If you use your own equipment, you should have it professionally serviced before your holiday: have the bindings adjusted, the base waxed and the edges sharpened.
Or you can hire state-of-the-art equipment on site – directly at the valley station of the Drei Zinnen Helm or Kronplatz ski areas. Tip: booking online saves time and often money too.
2. Layered clothing
The weather in the mountains can change – from bitterly cold mornings to sunny lunch breaks at the hut. Therefore, rely on the tried-and-tested layering principle:
• Breathable underwear (merino wool is worth its weight in gold),
• an insulating mid-layer (fleece or wool),
• a windproof and waterproof ski jacket.
Don't forget: helmet, ski goggles (for sun & snow), gloves, hat and buff. And: sun cream with a high SPF – a must even in winter!
3. Fit for the slopes: preparation pays off
Skiing is physically demanding. The fitter you are when you arrive, the more fun you will have – and the lower your risk of injury. Simple exercises a few weeks beforehand can help:
• Squats and lunges to strengthen the thighs
• Balance exercises (e.g. standing on one leg, using a balance pad)
• Endurance training such as cycling or jogging to improve your fitness
Regular stretching exercises also prevent muscle soreness – especially in the calves and lower back. After a day of skiing, the 5 saunas at Hirben await you.
4. Check your ski pass & ski area in advance
The 3 Zinnen Dolomites Region, Cortina d'Ampezzo and Plan de Corones ski areas offer a varied skiing experience with over 200 kilometres of slopes, modern lifts and perfect connections via the SkiPustertal Express, which connects the Drei Zinnen Helm and Kronplatz ski areas every half hour. All our guests receive the South Tyrol Guest Pass, which allows them to use all trains and buses free of charge. If you plan to explore several ski resorts, the Dolomiti Superski Pass is worth considering.
Tip: Ski passes can be purchased online, often cheaper than on site – and you avoid queues at the ticket office.
5. Arrival overview – arrive stress-free
Whether by car or train: planning ahead makes for a more relaxed journey. You can reach Niederdorf easily by train – we at Hirben will be happy to pick you up at the station. Sustainable, convenient and no need to search for a parking space.
If you are travelling by car, please note: winter tyres are mandatory, and you should also have snow chains with you for safety reasons. Even though the road maintenance services do a very good job, heavy snowfall or mountain passes can lead to snow-covered roads.
6. Arrive mentally: holidays begin in the mind
Even if it is tempting to jump straight out of the car and onto the slopes, treat yourself to a gentle start. Perhaps with a walk along the paths around the Hirben, a visit to our sauna or a cup of tea on the terrace of your suite. This will help you find the right rhythm for your holiday – and your body will thank you for it.
7. Stay safe on the road: insurance & emergency tips
No one likes to think about emergencies – but being prepared gives you peace of mind. Clarify in advance:
• Is travel insurance advisable?
• Does your insurance cover skiing accidents?
• Do you have your e-card/health card with you?
Tip: Save the most important emergency numbers in your mobile phone before you go on holiday. And download the ‘112 Where ARE U’ app – it helps to transmit your location in an emergency.
Conclusion: Well prepared. Even better rested.
Your skiing holiday with us will be unforgettable – if you get your body, equipment and mind into winter mode. And with a little preparation, your first turn on the slopes will be as easy as your second course at dinner in the Hirben.
We look forward to seeing you – and to the first snowflake falling.
