Hiking in the Dolomites – Well prepared for your mountain adventure

| Off to the mountains

The Dolomites are calling – and we’re already on our way! With a clear mind, steady steps, and a backpack full of anticipation. Hiking in the Dolomites is more than just movement – it’s a way to arrive, to reconnect, and to dive into the breathtaking beauty of South Tyrol’s nature.

Discover some of the best hiking routes right around our hotel, the Hirben. Ask Walter, our experienced hiking guide and passionate mountaineer, for his insider tips. Or chat with Barbara, who’s always happy to share her favourite places in the mountains.

Gear up – Your best hiking buddy
Without proper hiking boots, you're not going far. Solid footwear with good grip is essential – and so is dressing in layers, because mountain weather loves to surprise.
Fabian’s tip:
“Don’t forget your sunglasses – the mountain sun can be intense!” Also important: sunscreen, a hat, and a full water bottle. Pack smart, and the trail becomes even more enjoyable.

Planning is key – Or at least half the journey
Every great hike starts with the right route. Check the distance, elevation gain, huts along the way, and, of course, the weather forecast. A map or an offline route on your phone is a must.
Barbara’s advice:
“Don’t overload your day – go shorter and take the time to really enjoy the scenery.” A hidden gem: the Wildbachweg trail in the Silvestertal valley above Dobbiaco. It offers spectacular Dolomite views and peaceful spots to rest. The Bonner Hut along the way is perfect for a break and some local mountain food.

Safety first – Because you matter
The mountains are beautiful – and real. Stick to marked trails, respect the time estimates, and if in doubt, turn around earlier rather than too late.
Erhard likes to remind us (with a wink):
“There’s no room for recklessness in the mountains – but plenty for awareness.” Thinking about a via ferrata? Then gloves, helmet, proper gear – and full focus – are essential. Your safety always comes first.

Trail snacks – Because mountain air makes you hungry
A hearty snack with water and something salty or sweet is a must on any hike. Our insider tip: Speck and mountain cheese from South Tyrol taste twice as good with a view of the Dolomites.
Barbara swears by it
“A slice of homemade bread with butter and fresh herbs from the garden – that’s my perfect mountain break.”
